The Boys and Girls National Schools in Ballinamore are set to amalgamate this coming September.

Following a meeting of the Boards of Management of the two National Schools last night (Tuesday, May 6), it has been agreed that the amalgamation will start from the beginning of the next school year.

Speaking with the Leitrim Observer, Ballinamore Area councillor, Gordon Hughes, said the amalgamation has already been approved by the Department of Education and he understands that the newly amalgamated schools will be relocated to the former secondary school building, Mean Scoil Fatima.

“I have also been in touch with Deputy Frank Feighan with regard to providing additional funding for necessary remedial works to be carried out to make it suitable for national school pupils and he is to make representations to the Department of Education in this regard,” he said.

“This is a great news story for Ballinamore as it means a suitable use has been found for one of the available secondary school buildings and the vacancy of the national school will also enable the childcare groups to consider moving to this location (subject to approval of the school boards), as their present facilities are wholly inadequate.

“Finally, I would like to thank the Church Bodies involved, the Boards of Management, parents and school principals for coming to this decision to ensure pupil numbers are retained in Ballinamore.”
