Brothers face murder charges

Two brothers who were both reared in Carrick-on-Shannon are facing separate murder charges from December last year.

20-year-old Matthew Gralton who was brought up in Carrick-on-Shannon and who now has an address at Mount Prospect, Roscommon was charged last Thursday with the murder of Christy Daly at Bog Lane, Kilbride, Clara, Co Offaly on December 29, 2013.

Matthew is the younger brother of Ray Gralton (22) who was charged with the murder of 28-year-old mother of two, Sara Staunton in Mayo Abbey, Balla on December 14, 2013.

It is alleged that the two brothers committed murder on two different individuals just two weeks apart in December last year.

Matthew Gralton was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison to appear this morning, Wednesday, March 5 at the District Court, while Ray Gralton is also in custody and is expected to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday, March 7.

Matthew Gralton, who is the second man to be charged in connection with the murder of 47-year-old Chris Daly, made no reply when the charge was made to him last Thursday, February 27. Ross Allen of Kilmonaghan Lodge, Clara, Co Offaly is also accused of murdering Christy Daly.

A father of six, Mr Daly was shot eight times in the chest and arm almost a week before his body was found in the rural area. His body was discovered sitting upright in a six-foot drain on a bog lane, near where he had been living.
