Colreavy calls for charities to be properly regulated

Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin TD for Sligo/North Leitrim has called for proper regulation of charities.

He said, “There can be no doubt as to the sincerity of the vast majority of people who work with different charities. Those involved in charities are among the most selfless and giving people, who often do most of their work unnoticed by the public.

“It is questionably criminal as well as obscene that the money of hard-pressed citizens given in good faith and generosity to help improve the lives of people with disabilities should be diverted to slush funds to provide pension benefits most people could only dream of for these same executives.” He said it would be “tragic if the actions of a few” were to blemish the record of heroic volunteers.
