Concern over new addiction centre

Residents in Kilclare are very concerned over the proposed relocation of Gulladoo Addiction Treatment Centre to the former Mulross Nursing Home, six miles from Carrick-on-Shannon.

A meeting was held in the former nursing home last week and Martin Quinn, Director of Gulladoo Addiction Treatment Centre (currently located outside of Carrigallen) confirmed to locals that he is planning to relocate to Mulross. It is understood the move will be completed by the end of this month.

Mulross closed in 2013 following HIQA inspections and the resignation of the Registered Care provider.

The meeting was attended by about 50 local residents, councillors and election candidates who raised their concerns regarding location and suitability of the premises for this centre.

Another meeting was held last night, May 6 on the issue and information leaflets about the new centre were distributed to local homes this week.

One local said “residents are up in arms as this has progressed without any local consultation, planning application or apparent consideration of our concerns.”

Residents believe that the security of the site and close proximity of other businesses and houses are in contrast with the remote and rural location of the current Gulladoo site.

Gulladoo Centre treats people with alcohol, gambling and other addictions including substance abuse.
