Fears are growing for the welfare of an Aughavas man missing from his home since last Thursday evening/Friday morning.

Eugene (Geno) Charles was last seen on CCTV footage walking along the Longford Road out of Carrigallen at around 12.40am on January 11.

He was wearing a check shirt and a hi-vis vest at the time and it is thought he may have been heading out towards a friend’s house.

However, he has not been seen since and has not been in touch with his family.

His brother, Mícheál, said that the family were extremely concerned for Eugene’s welfare.

“He has never been out of touch for this length of time before,” he told the Leitrim Observer.

Eugene is in his early 60s and is described as being around 5 ft 7 inches tall, of stocky build, with grey hair and blue eyes. He is visually impaired and there are serious concerns for his welfare as he did not have a jumper or jacket with him at the time he went missing and temperatures have dropped substantially since Friday.

Locally searches have been carried out in the Carrigallen area by family members and volunteers. Further searches are planned for a wider area of Carrigallen and into Moyne and Corriga and the family say they are incredibly grateful for the support and assistance they have received over the past few days.

“We’d also ask that any landowners in the area check their property boundaries, land and outbuildings,” said Mícheál. “And if anyone saw him or may have given him a lift, please get in touch with ourselves or the gardai.”

Gardai have also issued an appeal for information from anyone who may have seen Eugene in and around the Carrigallen area or any part of the Leitrim/Longford border area on January 10 or 11. Local business owners are also asked to check their CCTV footage for any sightings which may help with the investigation.

If you have any information please contact Carrick-on-Shannon Gardai on (071) 9650510. If you wish to volunteer to help search for Eugene please contact Mícheál on (087) 677 9500.
