Horses under control

The number of stray horses in Leitrimhas decreased over the past three years. In 2011, 40 horses had to be controlled by Leitrim County Council, but so far this year only 14 have come to its attention.

Fianna Fáil Deputy Eamon O’Cuiv queried the cost of controlling horses per local authority. This year Leitrim County Council has only spent €5,067 (lowest in the country) dealing with stray or wandering horses.

This compares quite favourably compared to the €14,706 spent by the council in 2011 implementing the Control of Horses Act around the county.

The amount of funding provided by the Department varies between councils due to the number of horses being impounded, the number of horses being reclaimed by owners and the pound facilities available to the local authorities.
