Senator Marc MacSharry has hit out the Government for what he has described as “systematic attacks on people with disabilities.”
Fianna Fáil’s Seanad Spokesperson on Health Senator MacSharry has accused the Government of a “gross failure to support people with disabilities in the North West.”
Senator MacSharry was referring to new information supplied to Fianna Fáil by the HSE saying, “Waiting lists for basic assessment and treatment of children with disabilities have spiralled out of control across the country.
“The figures supplied to us show that nationally, there are now 2,090 children who have been waiting for over a year to see an Occupational Therapist and 2,983 children who have been waiting over a year for a Speech and Language Therapist.”
Senator MacSharry added, “There is also a worrying lack of Early Intervention Teams, which are provided by the HSE to quickly assess children with special needs and start them on treatment.
FF’s Seanad Spokesperson on Health added, “There are only 58 of these teams in operation in the entire country.
“Due to cuts in resources, there are only two in Sligo and Leitrim.”
