National Heritage Week in Ballinamore and Mohill Libraries

National Heritage Week is being celebrated throughout the country in the period August 23rd to 31st and the theme of this years events is ‘discover the past, build the future’. Both Mohill and Ballinamore Libraries are joining the celebrations with a number of events taking place throughout the week

On Tuesday 26th August, there will be an “Old Crafts and Customs of Ireland” DVD being shown on the large screen in Ballinamore Library at 8pm. This wonderful film was recorded in the counties of Leitrim, Cavan, Roscommon and Fermanagh in the 1990’s.

It features Traditions like Making Mud Turf, Hay, Ploughing and Pattern to the Holy Well; and Trades like Tinsmith, Wheelwright, Millar, Cooper, Blacksmith and Creelmaker. 

The film duration is 75 minutes and there is no admission charge.  We encourage different generations of families to attend together, in order to have discussion after the film about many of these everyday events and trades that are now very rare. 

On Wednesday 27th there will be an Evening of Leitrim Songs in Mohill Library starting at 6.30pm. Local singer Fionnuala Maxwell will perform songs from her popular CD ‘Sing a Leitrim Song’. There will be an Exhibition on Leitrim Music throughout the week to compliment this event.

On Thursday 28th at 8.30pm in Ballinamore Library, there will be a lecture by the renowned historian Seán Ó Suilleabháin. The title of this event is “Surnames of Leitrim” – learn about the popular Leitrim Surnames and about the variants of Surnames and how they came about.

On Friday 29th at 6.30pm in Mohill Library, local historian Oliver Fallon will give a talk about “Leitrim in World War 1” and about Leitrim people’s contribution to the First World War. Come along early in order to view the World War 1 Exhibition.

Noel Sweeney takes the floor in Ballinamore Library at 8pm and his talk is “Ballinamore in the 1950s and 60s”.

This presentation will include a photographic Slideshow with many unique and previously unseen photographs of the town dating back to 1960.

If you plan it correctly, it may be possible to attend both the Mohill and Ballinamore Library events. All of the above events are free of charge for National Heritage Week.
