New IRA admit murder of David Black

A republican paramilitary group calling itself the IRA has admitted responsibility for the murder of prison officer David Black who died in an ambush on the M1 earlier this month.

In a statement to the Irish News newspaper based in Belfast, the new group says the killing was in direct response to conditions within Maghaberry Prison. The group said it killed Mr Black “to protect and defend” republican prisoners.

There has been a long running republican protest at the jail in relation to strip searching and the treatment of dissident prisoners.

David Black, a 52-year-old father of two was shot by gunmen on the M1 near Lurgan, Co Armagh on Thursday, November 1 as he drove to work.

Three men were arrested and questioned in connection with the killing. One man was arrested in South Leitrim on November 2 and brought to Carrick-on-Shannon for questioning, the other two were arrested and questioned in Northern Ireland.

All three were released without charge.

In July this year, it emerged that some of the main dissident republican terrorist factions in Northern Ireland were uniting to form a new version of the IRA.

Mr Black, who was from Cookstown, was laid to rest last week.
