Second baby death investigated at Cavan Hospital

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the death of a baby at Cavan General Hospital, the second such death at the hospital in two weeks and the third in under 18 months.

In a statement, the HSE confirmed that a baby born on Tuesday, May 13 died in the hospital on Wednesday, May 14, the circumstances of the death were not revealed.

In accordance with normal practice, a full review of the circumstances surrounding the death will be carried out, the HSE said.

“Cavan and Monaghan Hospital management would like to offer its deepest sympathy to the family on their tragic loss and hope they will be given the privacy that they need to deal with their grief. The family of the baby has asked that the media respects their privacy to allow them mourn their loss. In respecting their wishes, the HSE will make no further comment.”

A separate investigation is already underway into the death of a baby boy at the hospital last April 26th. Experts are to investigate if a delay in performing an emergency caesarean section on a woman whose baby was in distress contributed to the child’s death at the hospital.

A senior doctor who works in the hospital is now on adminstrative leave although no adverse findings have been made against the medic.
