Tragedy was averted in Carrick-on-Shannon last Friday night after a drunk man took control of a car with a young child in the back seat.

A couple and their son came into Carrick-on-Shannon last Friday night, July 18 to collect takeaway food. At approx. 11.40pm the father went to collect the food and left the mother and child in the car at Main Street.

It is understood a drunk man jumped into the driver’s seat of the car. Gardai said the mother got out to try and get her son out, but the stranger took off and drove around the town with the terrified young child still in the back seat.

When the car returned on the loop of Carrick-on-Shannon staff from Murtagh’s Bar stopped the car and driver and held him there until Gardai arrived.

Insp. Ray Mulderrig said “luckily there were no injuries or damage.” He acknowledged and thanked the staff of Murtagh’s Bar for their assistance.

A local man is due to appear before Carrick-on-Shannon District Court this Friday, July 25 charged with drunk driving but a number of additional charges are expected to be added.
