The Gathering: This weekend after months of hard work and planning the people of the parish of Aughrim/Kilmore will celebrate their Gathering weekend festival. The weekend gets underway with an insomniacs shotgun start golf outing at 6am in Carrick-on-Shannon golf course on Friday morning. Then at 2pm on Friday in the Community Centre Dangan the senior citizens of the parish will come together for 2 hours of partying and entertainment with music, storytelling, dancing and lots of food on the agenda.
Friday evening at 8pm our special guests will be all the children from our 3 schools in the parish as we have the official opening of the weekend at 8pm at the Community Centre, Dangan. During this time we will bury our historic 100 year time capsule. The children from our 3 schools will play a massive part in this historic event. The procession will be lead by a piper and will begin at 8pm and will consist of all the children from the 3 schools transporting the time capsule down to the burial site. Then Friday night we move on to The Kilmore inn where we will celebrate a party never seen in June before as we will have a Christmas party. There will be lots of Christmas food and presents with music by Alan Clarke. Saturday morning begins at 10am at Kilmore GAA pitch with an 8KM walk and run and a longer cycle. There will also be an U-10 blitz taking place at Kilmore GAA pitch from 11am. We will have 2 history talks on the Saturday, the 1st at 12pm at Drumsna railway station and the second at 3pm in the Community Centre on history in the Aughrim & Kilmore in the 19th and early 20th century. In between that we will have a car treasure hunt getting under way at Kilmore GAA pitch at 1pm. Registration begins at 12.30pm and their is an excellent prize of a family hamper for the winning car. Kilmore play Kilbride in the O Rourke cup at 5.30pm on Saturday evening at the pitch. Then on Saturday night our Gathering banquet takes place with music getting underway at 8pm with John & Catherine McEvoy. Our Meal will be served between 8pm and 8.30pm sharp. This will then be followed by music by The Sierras Band from 11pm. Tickets are strictly limited to 200 and are selling fast and need to be pre-booked. Tickets cost just €15 and can be booked by contacting Brian Carroll 087-2420896 or any member of the Committee. Sunday begins with our weekly Sunday mass in Aughrim old graveyard at 10.30am. We would ask people to assemble at Aughrim church at 9.45am and we will have buses to transport people to and from the graveyard. Then at 4pm Hillstreet village is the place to be as we have numerous attractions for all the family including Bouncing castles, Vintage car display, face painting, Irish dancing, stalls and displays, Animals on display, fancy dress parade and music. Then at 8pm we have our Rodeo bull kicking into action with the challenge for the Aughrim/Kilmore king of the rodeo bull taking place at 10.30pm. From 8pm there will also be a BBQ of a pig. At 9pm we will be announcing our Car treasure hunt winner and we will also be having our ball race. This will be a large number of balls released from the top of Hillstreet village and whichever ball goes the furthest wins. Lines will be on sale over the weekend priced at just €2 with a prize of €100 for the winner. Then at 10pm we will release a balloon for every town land in our parish into the night sky. Music will kick off in Early’s with Hammer Beirne and in Bracken’s with a mighty traditional Irish night with numerous musicians. The Aughrim/Kilmore Gathering Chairman commented “There is a great buzz already developing in the parish about the weekend coming up, I would encourage all families in the parish to come out and support each event this weekend and make it a weekend that we will never forget”.
