TIDY TOWNS NEWS: The Tóstal Parade took place on bank holiday Sunday and the Tidy Towns Group was not only out in force, but won first prize in the parade. Members of the Group had dressed to represent each of the areas that they focus on, including floral, litter, waste management, heritage and wildlife. We were accompanied by one of the FÁS team, who carried the Tidy Towns banner. Everyone was delighted with the result as we had put a lot of effort into the presentation. And we had great fun doing it. The Group is very appreciative of the massive undertaking by the Tóstal Committee whose members cleaned up the town on bank holiday Monday morning and left it in pristine condition for the community to enjoy the events of the day. We are glad to say that all the hanging baskets and planters are now in place and the town is looking terrific. A big thank you to Tommy Flynn and his team for all their hard work. If anyone is interested in joining one of the watering teams, please contact Karen at 086 8101467. The expectation is that each team will water once a fortnight, which is not too onerous. Don’t forget that the “litter busting buddy” anti-litter slogan competition is running at the moment. Details are in the main shops and businesses. If you submit a name and slogan, you could be in with a chance of winning €50. Get your kids involved as well.Dressing up the windows of unused shops is progressing according to plan. At the moment there are three, Glimpses of the Past, on Bridge Street, an art exhibition in the old Bargains Shop, Barrack Square and an equestrian display beside the Millrace Pub. Go along and have a look at them, they are well worth a visit. We hope to have the use of at least three more shops, so watch this space. The adjudication of the Tidy Towns Competition is now upon us. The judges usually visit within a week or two of the Tóstal Festival. Thank you to all the people who are keeping their areas litter and weed free. We need a big push now. The flowers and plants look beautiful, some of the unused shops have had their windows dressed, and the eyesore at the back of the car park has been demolished. If we can just ensure that the town is litter free, we should present a very pleasant picture for the judges’ visit. Please play your part and help us to present the town in the best possible light.
