Bornacoola Gun club: The Bornacoola Gun club have donated a large specially designed bird table and bird bath to the Scoil Mhuire National School as part of an educational initiative on nature and wildlife. If you are passing by, keep an eye out for the new additional to the school yard. Hopefully, the young children will benefit from seeing and recognising different birds, wildlife and songbirds using the table. It is located on the bank opposite the school and bird feeders have been also supplied. The gun club also erected nesting boxes in the vicinity of the school and again this should create an interest for the young generation. The cost of this project was covered from some of the proceeds of the last Christmas gun club draw which was kindly supported by many within the parish and beyond.
The gun club has a big role in wildlife promotion, game conservation and habitat preservation and we hope this will help to reconnect children in Bornacoola with nature. In the past, children went to look for frog spawn, to trawl ponds, to fish, to experience the dawn chorus, to search for birds’ nests or even to build a bird feeder or a nestbox. It was hands-on and involved direct contact with nature. After all, exploring the natural world is a crucial part of growing up. Sadly, studies have shown that people in Ireland are spending less and less time actively engaging with nature. People of all ages benefit from exploring the world outside: it leads to us all gaining both new skills and a more positive and healthy lifestyle. What’s more, ensuring that today’s children have a proper understanding of nature is perhaps the best way of all to ensure that conservation and nature in Ireland will have a future. Well done to all the lads in the gun club who assisted with this educational initiative.
Finally, the gun club members are currently undertaking a vermin control programme. You can contact Shane Reynolds at 087 9751993 for further details if you have any unwanted ‘guests’ .
