In June 2011, the St. John’s Heritage Committee was formed. Its aims are to preserve St. John’s Church as a place of worship, and to create a space within the church that will be dedicated to exhibiting some aspects of Drumshanbo’s rich heritage.

The Killegar archive lecture

Leitrim County Library, Ballinamore, will host a lecture entitled ‘The Killegar Archive: a Leitrim treasure’ on this evening Wednesday, 30 January at 7.30 pm. The speaker will be Martin Morris, an archivist who worked on the papers.

The Killegar Archive, consisting of papers of the Morgan and Godley families of Killegar, Carrigallen, is on loan to Leitrim County Library from the Killegar Estate. The collection is a unique window into the lives of members of the families for about three hundred years from before the purchase of the estate by Richard Morgan in 1734 to close to the death of his descendant Lord Kilbracken in 2006. Most of the archives concern the Godley family, with the bulk being the papers of Lord Kilbracken, who led a long and remarkable life.

The collection is also an important resource for local historians. The lecture will explore the papers and what they tell us about the people who created them. Admission to this Lecture is free and everyone is welcome.
