Regretted death of Mary McMenanin The much regretted death of Mary McMenanin, Blairstown, Castlefin, Co. Donegal, mother of Elizabeth Gilhooley, wife of Brendan, Summerhill, Carrick-on-Shannon occurred at the Arch View Nursing Home, Co. Donegal on August 21st. Though having reached an advanced age, her death came as a shock to her family and friends. Her removal took place to St. Mary’s Church, Castlefin for Mass at 11 o’clock on Thursday, August 23rd.

Though having reached an advanced age, her death came as a shock to her family and friends. Her removal took place to St. Mary’s Church, Castlefin for Mass at 11 o’clock on Thursday, August 23rd.

Her interment then followed in the adjoining cemetery. To all left to grieve for her, her daughters Marie and Elizabeth, sons Seamus, John, Patrick and Tom, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters Annie and Betty, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends goes our deepst sympathy. May Mary’s soul Rest in Peace. Amen.

The late Olive Kiernan

We regret to record the death of Olive Kiernan (nee McLoughlin), formerly of Main Street, Carrick-on-Shannon which sad event occurred unexpectedly at her home in Northampton, England on Saturday, September 8th. Daughter of the late Tom and Winifred McLoughlin, Main Street, she was married to a Carrigallen man named Jimmy Kiernan who together with her daughters, granddaughters, brother Seamus, sisters Maura, Phyllis, Margaret and Kathleen and their families are left to share her loss. Her funeral has yet to be arranged but will take place in England. To all who grieve for Olive, and there are many, goes our sincerest sympathy. We all have many pleasant memories of her as a child around town. May she Rest in Peace.

Welcome home, Marie

Among visitors to town this week was Marie Garrehy, daughter of the late Michael and Rebecca (nee McNutt). She was accompanied by her daughters Clodagh and Maeve and granddaughter Kate Irvine. Marie was born and raised at Shannon Lodge (The Liberty). Her father, the late Michael, was a Clareman who came to work in Carrick-on-Shannon Post Office. He married a local girl, Rebecca McNutt, and raised his family. Marie worked as a drapery assistant in Brendan Carthy, Bridge Street, Carrick-on-Shannon and they emigrated to America in 1967.

Marie was delighted to see everything looking so well and thought Carrick had improved a lot over the years. She returns to Los Angeles on September 14th and would like to be remembered by all who knew her in the old days of Carrick.

Set Dancing Classes

Set Dancing Classes for adults in St Mary’s Hall, Ck-on-Shannon. Beginners and advanced all welcome. Starts Wed Sept 19th at 8:30pm. Further info contact 085-1293298. Fr Mychal Judge exhibition

Carrick library are hosting an exhibition on Fr Mychal Judge from Tuesday 11th September – Saturday 29th September. Free to all. Carrick-on-Shannon library Opening hours are: Monday and Wednesday 11-2pm 3-8pm, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 11-2pm 3-6pm and Saturday 11-2pm 3-5pm.

Trampoline for Adults

Do you look with envy at kids bouncing on trampolines in gardens? Are you secretly delighted when the bouncy castle man leaves it an extra day before collection? Then we are looking for you. The adult classes start on Wednesday 12th September from 8-9pm in Carrick on Shannon Gym club- the end unit in Northwest Business Park on the Castlecara Rd. A Sentimental and Historical Journey

The Chairman of the Historical Society, John Feely, travelled to Aughnasheelin recently where he launched Archives 100 in the presence of a very large crowd. This book contains a diary of events in the South Leitrim area over the last 100 years including reports from Carrick on the Races, Bachelors, County Council meetings and a feast of other stories like Matchmaking, Breach of Promise, The Mission, Parcels from America and a thought provoking account by a Leitrim girl of life in a foreign country without rain. Our St Vincent de Paul Ozanam House Shop opening hours are being extended to include Monday & Wednesdays, Our Shop opening hours are now as follows Mondays 11am-2pm Tuesdays & Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays 11am to 5 pm & 8 pm to 10 pm also Fridays 11am to 5 pm.

Become a Blood Donor

The mobile unit of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will visit the Bush Hotel in Carrick on Shannon this evening Wednesday September 12th. Please note Clinic time 4.30pm to 8pm. New Donors are always welcome.

Storytime session for children

The Reading Room Bookshop is a having a storytime session for children from three to six, this Saturday, 15th September at 11.30am. We’ll tell some stories and read some stories. Please note that for Saturday Storytime, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Also the children and teenage book clubs will be resuming at the start of Oct, to book a place for your child (there are three age categories: 7yr - 9yrs; 10yrs - 12yrs and 13plus) please contact Orlagh at The Reading Room on 071 9671580.

Mulvey Centre Indoor Market

Situated in The Mulvey Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon next door to Gerard Anthony and opposite Lidl, this market is open Sat from 10.00am to 5.00pm and Sun from 9.00am to 5.30pm.

You can find an eray of interesting items, antiques, bric a brac, new and used clothing, hand made candles, hand knitted items, handmade craft items, vintage, jewellery, household items and lots more. You have to drop by to see for yourself and all items at knock down prices. New to the market is a stall run by The North West Simon Community- you can buy clothes, ornaments, books, bags, jewellery etc and alternatively the charity are looking for items to sell in good condition. Castlecarra Art Group Exhibition

The Irish Wheelchair Association runs art lessons on Wednesday afternoons in Carrick. A mixed group of people attend including some with disabilities, and enjoy an afternoon of painting. This exhibition brings together recent work created during the weekly class. The exhibition runs from 11th September till 19th October in The Jury Room in The Dock, opening hours 10.30am - 3pm Monday-Friday 10.30am - 5pm Saturday. All welcome.

Rainbows Programme: Breffni Family Resource Centre is delighted to be in a position to offer the Rainbows Programme for children who are grieving a death, separation or other painful transition in their family.

New Term at Breffni Youth Cafe: Breffni Youth Cafe will be re-opening for all groups on Monday 10th of September, we are looking forward to welcoming everyone back and hopefully seeing some new faces. Saol Nua Social Group: Saol Nua Social Group is a club for adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues. Saol Nua is primarily a social club that also provides support and direction to information, mental health services, advocacy, and community involvement. The club is open to members of the National Learning Network as well as anyone who feels marginalised or isolated.

The aim of the club is for people to make friendships, motivate participants, get active, achieve goals and to have a healthy social life within the local community.
