TIDY TOWNS NEWS: This is an appeal by the Tidy Towns Group (Pride in Drumshanbo). We urgently need additional volunteers to join the watering team for the hanging baskets and planted boxes. The way it’s done, is that every evening a team of two undertakes the watering. Each team has a designated evening. We need seven teams per week at least. The ideal would be a Rota of once a fortnight per team, but we are nowhere near the required numbers for that. Please contact Karen (086 8101467) if you have a hitch on your car and if you could bring a friend along with you one evening a week. It takes a little over an hour, and it’s only for the summer season. A lot of work and expense has gone into planting the baskets and boxes and now they absolutely have to be maintained. It’s your town too, so please lend a hand to keep it looking beautiful.

LOVE, LIVE MUSIC: Drumshanbo came alive to the sound of music on Thursday 20th when we celebrated Love, Live music evening. This was a free event and Drumshanbo Comhaltas was delighted to showcase our wonderful culture of music and Sean Nós dancing. The Library was a hive of activity as avid readers left their books aside to try out the Mouth Organ and Bouzouki. Passersby stopped to enjoy the wonderful entertainment on the street. Thanks to Sven Paetz for the Bouzouki lessons accompanied by Bríd O’Keeffe on Fiddle and to Orla Ward for the Mouth Organ lessons. Thanks to all who took part in lessons and to the listeners. Thanks to all the musicians who took part in the outdoor session and to Sarah Ward for her fancy footwork, to Willie for providing the wood for Sarah to dance on, to all our committee for making this evening possible, to the 2 photographers, to Marian in the Library and to Doherty’s High street for the hospitality. Our vibrant Music culture is alive and well.
COMMUNITY ALERT AND TEXT ALERT: Following a series of local discussions and meetings it has been decided that now is an opportune time to reactivate Community Alert in the parish. Community Alert is about creating a greater awareness locally as to how community members can become more security and safety conscious. In many instances this involves the simplest of actions to reduce risks. Text Alert is an addition to the Community Alert programme. It enables communities that are organised to get messages alerting signed up members to suspect activities in a defined area very quickly. It is a requirement of text alert that all individuals wishing to participate complete a sign up agreement allowing the Community Alert Committee access to Mobile numbers solely for the purpose of text alert. Over the next three weeks members of the Community Alert committee will be visiting all homes in the parish with information on community alert and text alert and delivering the sign up sheets. There is no individual charge for this.
