11.8% of County are non-Irish nationals

The latest Census 2011 figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that 3,703 non-Irish nationals were living in Co Leitrim at the time of the Census, accounting for 11.8% of the population of the county.

“Profile 6 Migration and Diversity – A Profile of Diversity in Ireland ”, presents a profile of the non-Irish nationals living in Ireland in April 2011, along with results on recent migration, foreign languages and ability to speak English.

The figures show that of the 3,703 non-Irish nationals resident in the county, 1,665 were UK nationals – the largest non-irish nationality in the county, followed by Polish nationals with 764 persons.

The Census results show that of the 53,267 persons who arrived in Ireland in the year prior to April 2011, 282 were living in Co Leitrim. Of these 177 or 62.8 per cent were non-Irish nationals.

Deirdre Cullen, Senior Statistician at the CSO: “This report provides further analysis of the non-Irish population living in Ireland at the time of the last census. It examines aspects such as mixed nationality households, age structure and marital status, numbers by towns, as well as new data on ability to speak English by year of arrival into Ireland”.
