110% increase in child protection reports
The Review of Adequacy for Child and Family Services 2011 a shows rising pressure on services, with 110% increase in the number of child protection reports in Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan between 2008 and 2011.
According to the figures released by the HSE last week, in 2008 there were 114 child protection reports in Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan, by 2011 this had increased to 239.
However there was some positive news, during the same period the number of welfare reports fell slightly on figures from 2008, down from 701 to 634.
The figures for reports as of December 31, 2011 also revealed that the distribution of report types for Sligo/Leitrim/ West Cavan showed 73.8% were welfare cases, 4.2% were physical abuse, 7.3% were sexual abuse reports, 5.7% were emotional abuse and 9.0% were neglect reports.
In terms of placements for children in care in Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan on December 31, 2010, 77.1% of placements were with a foster family, a further 17.1% of placements were with a relative of the child, 2.9% were in residential care and 2.9% were marked ‘other’.
