€45,000 for garda who tried to save Gary McLoughlin

The High Court has paid tribute to Garda Bernard McLoughlin who attempted to save “his colleague and best friend” Garda Gary McLoughlin from Fenagh who died in December, 2009 after the patrol car he was on duty in with Bernard McLoughlin was rammed.

At the Garda Compensation Hearing on Monday, January 14, Garda Bernard McLoughlin told Ms Justice Mary Irvine that after finding a pulse, he held his colleague Garda Gary McLoughlin’s head in a recovery position until emergency services arrived. Gary McLoughlin died hours after the crash.

Garda Bernard McLoughlin was awarded a total of €45,000 compensation for his injuries.

Bernard said he was best friends with Gary, they shared a flat and had trained together.

Bernard McLoughlin has since taken educational leave to study in Perth, Australia.

He told the court that he and Gary had been searching for a speeding red car when it crashed into them at high speed at Lisfannon, Burt, Co. Donegal.

At Letterkenny Circuit Court, July 2011 Martin McDermott of Castlegrove, Raphoe, Co Donegal was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with the final year suspended for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin.
