An Bord Pleanála overturns appeal on St Mel’s Cathedral

St Mel’s Cathedral has been granted permission for the restoration development to go ahead this week.

An appeal to the works relating to the construction of a new roof and concrete sub floor had been submitted in April this year by local architect Liam Madden following permission granted by Longford County Council.

But An Bord Pleanála have overturned the appeal subject to conditions, the board said the development and works are “desirable in the interests of conservation and amenity.”

The planning authority has ordered revised proposals for the design of the roof structure to be submitted prior to the commencement of works.

In An Bord Pleanála’s conditions, they necessitate a glulaminated roof structure, which is a structural timber product consisting of several layers of dimensioned lumber glued together, in accordance with best planning practices for heritage and conservation.

The works authorised also does not include permission for the removal of the concrete slab added to the sanctuary area around 1977. Any proposal for the removal of this concrete slab shall be the subject of a separate planning application that provides details relating to the future scheme of works being proposed for the interior of the building.

A 30 day notice to begin work will be erected in the coming days. Some work has already begun on site in the Cathedral, since September 3. GEM Purcell are the contractors.

St Mel’s Cathedral aims to be open for midnight mass on Christmas Eve 2014.
