Brendan Wisley Jnr, a native of Ballinamore, will run both the New York City and Singapore Marathons in November and December respectively in aid of cancer.

The New York Marathon will be his fifth, running the previous 4 in his current homestay of Singapore, the city/state.

“I got into running when I moved to Singapore over nine years ago, living in the USA for 10 years prior to that,” says Brendan.

“Living in Singapore is quite demanding, with work travel bringing me all around Asia, Australia and even as far as Africa; last trip to Australia alone, was number 35 or thereabouts.

“I found that I needed a past time, so took up running, not to mention still playing the GAA here in Singapore.

“I participated in my first Marathon in Singapore 5 years ago, in temperatures well into 30 degrees. Singapore is practically on the equator and therefore has temperatures every day around 30 degrees, so training can be exhausting.

“Here is hoping that the many runs I did as a kid up in Kiltymooden and around Ballinamore, while a member of Ballinamore AC in the very late 70s will stand to me. Back then I was running alongside Gary Smyth, John Dolan and Paul Kieran to name a few.

“I will be running for Team Continuum, which is a non-profit organisation dedicated to taking immediate care of anyone involved in fighting cancer.

“My goal is to raise $5,000 US. My own mother, Marie Wisley lost her battle to cancer 5 years ago; I will dedicate this Marathon to my mother and to all cancer patients in Ireland.

“For those who would like to make a donation, there will be a collection box at my brother’s car wash business, in Ballinamore: Desmond Wisley Ecclestical Supplies.”
