Ballinamore Community Text Alert now operational

A community text alert system is in now operational in the following areas: Ballinamore, Aughnasheelin, Aughawillan, Drumreilly, Corraleehan, Corlough, Keshcarrigan, Kilclare, Kilnagross and Kiltubrid. There is currently a database of almost 1,000 subscribers.

The aim of the system is if a car and/or person is sighted in suspicious circumstances, or a crime is being committed, the Gardaí at Carrick-on-Shannon are contacted immediately.

In turn, the various area co-ordinators are then contacted and a text message is disseminated to all subscribers simultaneously. This results in 1,000 people being aware of the incident details as opposed to one, and ultimately greatly increases the possibility of a swift apprehension of the perpetrators by the Gardaí. A community text alert system is currently operational in Carrigallen and adjoining areas in Co. Longford and is proving very successful in combating crime.

This is essentially a community-based system whereby everybody is looking out for everybody and becoming more vigilant when unfamiliar vehicles or persons are in the area in suspicious circumstances. With the current incidence of rising crime this can only be a positive step to ensuring that our communities are protected and our citizens kept safe.

For those who have not yet subscribed, a collection point is located in Ballinamore Library. Subscription is only €5. Please subscribe and make our communities a safer place for all.

Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station number is 071-9650510.
