Call for personal alarms for elderly in wake of Sligo murder

Fianna Fáil Senator Mary White says she will work to ensure that all persons aged 66 and over should have access to a personal alarm scheme.

Senator White is Fianna Fáil’s spokesperson on Older People and following the murder of Eugene Gillespie in Sligo last week, she said, “This savage murder has further underlined the need for us to ensure that older people have enhanced security. It is well known that violent crimes against the elderly have been steadily increasing in recent years.

“Elderly people, particularly those living alone, are more likely to read about crime and worry that they will be targeted by criminals. Many elderly people lock themselves away in their homes and refuse to open the door for visitors if they do not recognise them. The murder of Eugene Gillespie is likely to frighten them even more.

“Fianna Fáil has specific recommendations to enhance security for older people. In the wake of the shocking and vicious murder of Eugene Gillespie we will redouble our efforts to see them come into effect.”
