Care & Repair launched in Manorhamilton

A Handyman and Befriending Service for Older People Living in North Leitrim and West Cavan.

‘Care & Repair’ is a new community initiative for people over 65 years of age, living in North Leitrim and West Cavan, who do not have a relative, friend or neighbour that can help them with small household jobs. A project supported by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by Co-operation and Working Together.

Leitrim Development Company will be delivering this new; exciting project, ‘Care and Repair’ is an Age Action franchise.

The project will use a mixture of local volunteers and employment scheme participants to go into people’s homes to undertake small jobs. All our volunteers and staff have been Garda vetted and have a photographic ID badge, which older people should ask to see before admitting them into their homes. The handymen are available to undertake any minor household job that takes under 2 hours, such as changing a light bulb, putting up safety rails, minor painting and gardening. This service is not designed to take work away from qualified trades’ people; it is only for minor jobs, so if the job takes over two hours our staff will recommend a reliable, local trades person to do the job.

For the safety and peace of mind of the Older Person, two people will attend each job, one handy person and one befriender. There is a social element to this project, as the handyman is completing the small job; our volunteer befrienders will be there to have a chat with the older person, which will act as a support to anyone feeling isolated or alone.

This project was launched on September 13 in The Bee Park Centre, Manorhamilton. It was a joint launch with the new Social Car Scheme in North Leitrim and West Cavan, which provides volunteer drivers to bring older people who do not have access to transport to non-emergency HSE appointments; this project was also funded by CAWT. The launch was attended by 60 people, including Active Age group members, volunteers, scheme participants, representatives from the agencies involved and local politicians. There was a large amount of interest and this initiative was warmly welcomed.

If you have any further questions, would be interested in using this service, volunteering as a handy person or befriender or if you require more information on services for Older People in Leitrim and West Cavan, please contact Anna McTiernan on 071 964 8013.
