Carrick assault victim gives the gift of life to others • Tragic death causes “shock, bewilderment and anger” locally

The tragic death of Carrick-on-Shannon man Andrew Dolan has given a number of people the gift of life, as his organs were used to save others after he passed away last Sunday, January 1.
The twenty year old NUI Galway biomedical science student, son of Joe and Rosie Dolan who own The Bush Hotel, died as a result of a horrific assault in Mullingar on December 23.
He had been kept alive since that date on life-support in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and over the weekend, his devastated family consented to switch off the machine.
A post mortem medical examination was held on Monday.
In a statement released on Monday on behalf of his family, Andrew’s father Joe Dolan paid tribute to his son as a “much loved, popular young man with a bright future.”
“My wife Rosie and our sons Gavin and Jack are devastated at the death of our son and our brother,” he said.
“We thank the many people, friends and Andrew’s fellow students in Carrick-on-Shannon and Mullingar who have been a great support to us during this devastating ordeal.”
His father said Andrew had been looking forward to a fulfilling career in medical science and asked people to remember him in their prayers.
Andrew was a goalkeeper with Shannon Gaels GAA club and he also played with Carrick RFC. His family have been long-time supporters of Leitrim GAA and are currently the sponsors of the county team.
Carrick area Councillor Gerry Reynolds who is good friends of the family said “Carrick and the surrounding area is in a state of shock, bewilderment, anger and annoyance that a fine young man could be taken from this family is such tragic circumstances.” He said “there is no explanation how a mindless act of violence can be perpetrated on an innocent man on a night out.”
