Carrick-on-Shannon Community News - 14th April, 2006
COMMUNITY SCHOOL NEWS
Bereavement & Separation Support Group: Thirteen students from the school went to Delphi young adventure centre on Monday 3rd April. These students were part of the bereavement and separation group within the school and they took part in leisure activities over a three day period. The activities included archery, kayaking, surfing and hill walking. The weather obliged with continuous sunshine.
The Dock goes into The Blue: Recently a number of students from the school were treated to an unforgettable performance in the Dock. Shootin Star Productions brought "Blue," an outstanding play by Ursula Rani Sarna, to the Dock where it was performed for one night only. Here, the audience dived right into the "Blue" and were kept down under for around one hour and fifteen minutes. This play portrays the typical pressures that young people of Leaving Cert age face as they grow up in a small town and try to deal with the exams ahead and prepare for life in the real world. With snippets of humour, this play shows, through a series of flashbacks, dialogue and narration, that a student's life is never straight forward. The play is centred on three childhood friends. They have a week to go before their exams and the end of the school year but they each have individual problems with their families. Des (Eoghan O'Neill) is the sensible and reliable one whom the other two depend on but he is being pressured by his father to stay on the farm. Danny (Geraldine Rooney) is smart and intelligent but she hides the fact that she has a crazy mother by burying herself in her books and studies. Finally there's Joe (Jimi McDonnell). He's the joker of the group but his constant talking and joking is only a cover for the fact that his life is going nowhere. His father is a schoolteacher who is very tough and strict on him. Everyday, they follow the same routine of jumping off the cliffs into the deep blue ocean where, for those few seconds, they escape reality and dive into a world where anything is possible and dreams can come true. On Friday nights they head into the city where they sneak into clubs to get a taste of student life until that one day, when their usual routine is horribly changed.
Ladies Football: The first year girls' team had a tough encounter against Swinford in the Connaught championship recently. The Leitrim girls got away to a great start and led by 2-5 to 1-1 at half time. However they made hard going of the second half and instead of sewing things up early on they lost their shape and allowed the Mayo girls get right back into it. Captain, Claire Gill played an inspirational role and pulled it out of the fire at the death on a final scoreline of 2-8 to 3-4. Good for Carrick were the afore mentioned Gill with Edel Mc Manus, Alison Mc Keon and Rebecca Duignan also shining. Goalie Niamh Spellman had a shaky period allowing in 2 goals in as many minutes but this was very much the exception and her excellent saves saved the day. It would be a miss not to note Ruth Cryan's stalworth contribution in defence. It wasn't pretty but a win is a win, well done.
Helper for Lourdes: The school is privileged to have been invited once again this year to supply a helper for the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. Fourth year student Neil Slevin was chosen in a draw held recently in the school. The students sold raffle tickets to fund raise. Congratulations to Ms Duffy & Ms Mc Brien who won easter eggs and thanks to Mulvey's Newsagent for the sponsorship.
Chess Congratulations: To our chess team who were victorious over Carrickmacross, Lanesboro and Boyle B recently. The team of Dan Gillan, Danny Foley, Cian Mc Loughlin and Aislin Molloy will now represent the school in the All Ireland in May.
Subject Choices: Third year students and their parents were given a very informative presentation on the options and subject choices for Leaving cert. Presentations on the Transition Leaving Cert, Leaving Cert Applied and the Leaving Cert Vocational Programmes offered by the school were well received by students and now all have completed their choices for next year.
Drug Awareness: Recovering drug addict and alcoholic, Jackie Burke spoke to fourth year students in the school recently in attempt to create awareness in young people of the dangers, side effects and consequences of drug addiction. He spoke from personal experience of the effects of the addiction on mental and physical well being. His personal story was very moving and his road to recovery a long and difficult one. He also brought a religious aspect to his whole talk. His presentation also includes a demonstration on what some of the drugs looked like. Students found his presentation "Brilliant" and commented that his personal approach as opposed to a dictatorial style was very effective. Jackie also spoke to parents in a very well attended and informative lecture.
Exams: We have come to the end of a very busy period for the school and particularly for our exam students. Who said the leaving cert was in June? Our exam students have now completed projects in the practical subjects and orals in Irish and the modern European languages as well as their LCVP portfolios. A number of our teachers were examiners for the department of Education & Science in some of these subjects. We thank everybody who helped and supported our students during this busy period and wish you all a very happy, peaceful and safe Easter.
carrick-on-shannon & district historical society
For our April meeting the Society will be visiting Andersons Thatched Pub on the Elphin Rd to celebrate the 'An Tostal' which was held in the town in April 1953. Freely translated 'An Tostal' means 'Ireland at home' and the government of the day and Bord Failte hoped to increase the number of tourists visiting Ireland in the 'offpeak' period by selecting about 60 centres across the land to hold a series of events which included military and country life parades, exhibitions, historical talks, sports competitions and, of course, traditional music and dancing. Other nearby centres chosen included Battlebridge and Drumshanbo where the festivities continue to this day. The Society will have on display a number of artefacts and exhibits and to help us to get into the swing of things we shall be welcoming some local traditional musicians, singers and dancers. All are welcome to join us - there will be no charge on this occasion. The date is Wednesday, 19th April and the time is 8.30pm.

tidy towns notes
What a pleasure it was to visit the Boys National School in Carrick last week and to see their enthusiasim for our Tidy Towns effort. They have formed their own Committee, with Chairman, Secretary, etc. and presently they are recycling all the School Litter. They are awaiting delivery of a Compost Bin from the Council. They already have a collection point for used batteries. The playground was Litter Free and the shrubbery on the right hand side was very well maintained and the grass area cut. They are having an 'Action Day" on April 28th. They have entered for the 'Green Flag Award' and this demands much work. So we wish them well in their endeavours. We are running a competition for the two National Schools in the Town, with a prize of €50 for the best entry of "The Ten Best ways to improve our marks in this years Tidy Towns Competition". Entries for this competition can be sent to: The Secretary, Tidy Towns Committee, Management Office, Market Yard Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon. Closing date is Friday 19th May 2006.
Last years mark was 250 out of 300. We came 8th out of 92 entries in Category C. Residents have mentioned that the Bottle Banks are not emptied frequently enough.
