Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group is excited about a programme of new projects for 2013. The Twin Traditions Expo, the Famine Attic Project and a new book.

The Twin Traditions Expo (12th February – 13th March 2013) is a collection of local history projects, important documents, images and items pertaining to Carrick-on-Shannon and Enniskillen.

This exhibition will be of interest to locals, visitors and schools. The exhibition is made possible through support of the International Fund for Ireland, Leitrim County Council, Fermanagh District Council and County Leitrim Enterprise Board.

In conjunction with Carrick-on-Shannon Historical & District Society the group is offering a unique living history opportunity; The Famine Attic Project.

If you would like to experience an overnight stay-in one of the few remaining Workhouses in Ireland, assist to preserve a heritage site for future generations and have some fun. This is the project for you! Visit our website: www.carrickheritage.com for more details.

A new book for 2013, in the previous year Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group was successful in securing PEACE III programme funding to conduct extensive research into the plantation of Leitrim.

The group became aware of rare documents pertaining to this pivotal time in Irish history, which contained specific reference to Carrick-on-Shannon and the surroundings areas. These documents potentially provide the corner stone of the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 commemoration planned for this year.

Historian Dr. Gerard MacAtasney has been engaged to conduct the research which will result in a new publication, a public exhibition and a lecture series throughout 2013. John Bredin, Chairperson states “this is a unique opportunity and is only made possible through the PEACE III Programme managed by the County Leitrim Peace Partnership”. The accurate historical data provides a basis to understand the events that have shaped social meaning in County Leitrim.
