Colreavy calls for quick resolution for Magdalene victims
Cllr Michael Colreavy SF
Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin TD for Sligo/North Leitrim, has called on the government to provide a quick and comprehensive resolution for the victims of the Magdalene Laundries.
“Many of the women who were detained in the Magdalene Laundries are aging. Time is of the essence to bring about a resolution for these women. Many of the Magdalene women are unwell due to their time incarcerated.,” he said discussing his party’s motion.
“To add insult to injury, these women cannot access the pensions that they are entitled to after giving so many years of gruelling labour to the religious orders as they did not pay the women for their work nor did they file the normal employer annual returns to revenue despite running the laundries as commercial entities. For justice to be done the government must act now and not let the current situation continue any longer.
“The government cannot shy away from the responsibilities it holds to these women. It is essential for the government to act now as justice delayed is justice denied.”
