Communities shocked and saddened by road deaths
The communities of Dromahair, Co Leitrim and Riverstown, Co Sligo have been left shocked and saddened by the deaths of two local men in a road traffic accident over the weekend.
Gardai in Ballymote, Co Sligo are investigating the single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred just off the R284 (Ballyfarnan to Sligo Rd about 5 miles from Riverstown), at Roughan, Sooey Co Sligo at approximately 11.40pm on the 2nd March.
22-year-old driver Declan McCormack, Ballinarry, Riverstown and 20-year-old passenger, Eoin Kelly, Greaghnafarna, Dromahair died at the scene and a rear seat passenger,also from Dromahair, Jordan Charters, was seriously injured. Mr Charters was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Local councillor, John McTernan said that the community were deeply shocked and saddened by the deaths of Mr Kelly and Mr McCormack.
“It is a huge trauma for their parents and siblings and I offer my heartfelt sympathy to the parents of the young men, Martin and Carmel Kelly and Dermot and Laura McCormack,” he told the Leitrim Observer.
“I know only too well the pain and sorrow that they are experiencing. I would also like to extend best wishes for a speedy recovery to Jordan Charters who was also in the car.”
Mr Kelly’s remains are reposing at his home in Greaghnafarna. His removal is planned for Thursday morning, arriving into St. Mary’s Church, Ballinagar for 12 noon Mass with burial afterwards in Carrowcrin Cemetery. He is survived by his parents Martin and Carmel and a wide circle of family and friends.
Mr McCormack is survived by his parents, Dermot and Laura, his brother Enda, sisters Emer and Celine, grandmother Bridget McConnell, extended family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held this morning, (Wednesday) at 11am in St. Brigid’s Church, Highwood, followed by burial in Ballyrush Cemetery.
