The communities of Aughavas and Carrigallen are mourning the death of Eugene Charles, known locally as Gino, who was buried at the weekend.

Mr Charles was last seen leaving Carrigallen at 12.40am on Friday, January 11. He was missing for five days, before his body was discovered at Kilahurk, Carrigallen on Wednesday, January 16.

A large number of locals from Aughavas and Carrigallen searched the area around the town with the Gardai, before the body was discovered opposite Carrigallen Church last Wednesday afternoon.

The Moyne road out of Carrigallen was closed from the afternoon of January 16 until after the body was removed from the scene on Thursday afternoon, January 17.

According to locals Eugene Charles was socialising with friends in Carrigallen on Thursday night, January 10. He left the bar and was wearing a High Visability Vest and was carrying a torch. Although Mr Charles did not live out the Moyne road, it is understood he had friends out that road. His torch was found by a search party not far from the stone gravelled lane to a new garage, just to the right past Carrigallen Church.

The death is understood to be a tragic one, with “no suspicious activity” reported by Gardai. The Garda Technical Bureau examined the body before it was removed from the scene at 1pm on Thursday, January 17.

Family members said prayers at the scene before the remains were transferred to Sligo General Hospital for a post mortem.

57 year old Eugene (Gino) Charles of Diffin, Aughavas, Carrigallen, was buried in Aughavas Cemetery after funeral mass at St Joseph’s Church on Saturday, January 19.

Eugene is survived by his brothers Pat, Frankie, Philip, Micheal and sisters Marion, Patricia and Kathleen as well as extended family.
