Congress of Trade Unions to stage major rally in Sligo

Sligo will next weekend host one of six major demonstrations organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to demand a resolution of Ireland’s bank debt problem.

The protest entitled ‘Lift the Burden – Jobs Not Debt’, will depart from Sligo County Council Offices at Riverside at 1.30pm on Saturday February 9 and make its way through the streets of Sligo before culminating in a rally in the town centre. Similar rallies will take place simultaneously in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

Speaking this week, General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions David Begg said Ireland’s 2013 presidency of the European Union presented an opportunity to highlight the fact that the public needs to send a very clear message to Europe. “Without a serious and significant deal on our debt there is no prospect whatsoever of a recovery in Ireland. That sum of €64 billion is equivalent to 40% of our GDP,” he said.

Mr Begg said new Eurostat figures showed that Ireland had paid more in absolute terms than any other EU state to prop up the banks. He concluded; “The figures show that the per capita cost of the Eurozone bank crisis across the EU was just €192. In Ireland by comparison the per capita cost is a staggering €9,000. That is simply unsustainable.”
