Council condemn Bank of Ireland pilot scheme for Drumshanbo
A new pilot scheme by Bank of Ireland to be experimented in the Drumshanbo branch this month was vehemently opposed by Cllr Caillian Ellis and his colleagues at March's Leitrim County Council meeting.
Fianna Fail Cllr Ellis put forward a motion proposing that the Council write to the Bank of Ireland immediately in relation to a proposal the bank is bringing forward where there will be no cash transferred on Wednesdays or Thursdays at their branch in Drumshanbo.
Cllr Ellis said "I see this as being a severe inconvenience to people from Ballinamore who transferred their accounts to Drumshanbo when the Bank of Ireland closed the sub office in Ballinamore some years ago."
Cllr Gerry Reynolds said this could move towards the trend of just one bank branch in the county town and could result in job losses. He mentioned the example of Virginia in Co Cavan which has a population of 3,000 people and no bank.
The council agreed to condemn this new pilot scheme for Drumshanbo and pledged to write to the Bank of Ireland Headquarters airing their views.
