Council adamant material dumped in error has been removed

Following complaints of illegal dumping on the Keadue Road, Leitrim Village by Leitrim County Council, the local authority have stated action has been taken to remove the dumped soil.

However, the action which they claim to have taken is being disputed by the resident who made the original complaint, who says Leitrim County Council made a written promise to remove the soil they dumped but have so far failed to do so.

In a statement to the Leitrim Observer yesterday morning (Tuesday), a Leitrim County Council spokesperson said, "Our Area Office have confirmed that they tipped a small amount of material on this site in error - this material has now been removed to a licensed site.

"There was also some clay waste material on the site which was not deposited by the Council and this material has been levelled off."

In relation to the ownership of the land where the dumping took place the statement said, "I understand that the site in question is privately owned."

However, the resident who raised the issue with the Leitrim Observer, disputes the claim made by Leitrim County Council that they moved any material from the site saying, "They didn't move anything. They only had a digger, there was no dumper or truck."

The Leitrim Village resident is adamant it was Leitrim County Council who were responsible for all the dumping claiming, "They dumped five truck loads before returning my phone calls. I'm certain it was the Council, I spoke to them and I took pictures."

According to the concerned resident the dumping led to flooding in the estate as drains were blocked and she fears the situation could now be worse after the levelling carried out by Leitrim County Council of the dumped material saying, "It takes away from the flood plain."

The resident who says her neighbours have also voiced their concerns to Leitrim County Council says the ground on which the Council should have been dumping is "very narrow for trucks turning," and she feels this may be the reason why the location close to her home was chosen.

She added, "It was the way I was spoken to made me realise there wasn't a permit," before adding, "It was only because I wrote a letter they realised they were dumping in the wrong place."

When contacted yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) seeking clarification on the issue, a spokesperson for Leitrim County Council reiterated the stance of the authority that all clay dumped by the Council has now been removed.

"I can confirm that a letter issued to the complainant yesterday advising that all of the clay deposited by Leitrim County Council on this site has been removed to an authorised location and that the remaining clay, which was not deposited by the Council, has been spread over a portion of the site.

"The complainant was further advised that the site has been secured by banking up the upper entrance and installing a gate at the lower entrance which will restrict any further tipping at this location."
