Dog breeding Act taking effect in region

The ISPCA has welcomed the introduction of the Dog Breeding Establishments Act which allows local authorities to inspect premises where there are six or more female dogs capable of breeding and ensure that they reach certain standards.

Two West Highland Terrier bitches, Izzy and Cali were surrendered to the ISPCA by a Roscommon dog breeder under pressure to comply with the Act. While somewhat dirty and in desperate need of a bath, both dogs were quite healthy and have quickly been reserved for adoption. It is anticipated that many breeders in the Roscommon/Leitrim area will reduce the number of dogs that they keep in order to comply with the regulations.

The ISPCA urges anybody who is aware of an establishment that comes under the Dog Breeding Establishments Act to notify the relevant local authority so they can ensure that it is operating legally.
