Dromod is Leitrim’s tidiest town for 34th year in a row

Dromod captured the title of Leitrim’s tidiest town for the 34th year in a row when the results of the SuperValu Tidy Towns Awards for 2012 were announced in Dublin last Monday.

Abbeyshrule in Co Longford won the overall national title and also claimed the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Village.

Dromod and county town Carrick-on-Shannon both scooped Gold Medals in this year’s awards.

The scores for towns and villages in Co Leitrim are:

Dromod 308 (+5 on 2011), Carrick-on-Shannon 303 (+4), Cloone 280 (+3), Drumsna 279 (+9), Ballinamore 276 (+4), Dromahair 269 (+8), Lurganboy 268 (+8), Drumshanbo 266 (+6), Drumkeerin 265 (+3), Mohill 264 (+7), Jamestown 257 (+10), Keshcarrigan 253 (+6), Fenagh 253 (+5), Kinlough 246 (+5), Carrigallen 224 (+3), Manorhamilton 221 (+13), Newtowngore 219 (+14), Leitrim Village 219 (-).

In neighbouring counties, among the results were:

Co Roscommon: Rooskey 263 (+4), Ballyfarnon 280 (+7), Boyle 256 (+3), Cootehall 226 (+5), Croghan 260 (+9), Keadue 306 (+2), Strokestown 225 (+7).

Co Sligo: Ballintogher 277 (+6), Ballygawley 201 (-), Grange 250 (+5), Rathcormac 235 (+12), Sligo 243 (+9).

Co Longford: Longford 281 (+3), Drumlish 274 (+7), Newtownforbes 236 (+4), Ballinalee 235 (+1).

Co Cavan: Cavan 284 (+5), Killeshandra 248 (+10), Arva 242 (+5), Belturbet 236 (+3).

Other national winners included Clonakilty, Co. Cork which received the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town, Westport, Co. Mayo which received the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, and Ennis, Co. Clare which was named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.

On hand to present the prizes were Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government and Mr. Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu, the competition’s sponsor.

Cllr Sean McGowan paid tribute to the hardworking committee in Dromod under the chairmanship of T.P. Cox for their excellent work in the village and congratulated them on winning the title each year since 1979.

Cllr McGowan also congratulated both Dromod and Carrick-on-Shannon for achieving the much-coveted Gold Medal which is testimony to the great work put in by the respective committees.
