THREE GOAL-DEN MOMENTS
For Drumkeerin players, management teams, officials and supporters, the week August 22nd to 28th will be remembered as one of the goal-den moments. More so they will be recalled with relish for each goal came in the dying moments of three games, dramatic and tense and each one bringing victory to our boys.
The first goal of the week came on Sunday in the final minute of the Intermediate Championship when John Cullen was quickest to pounce on the loose ball and drive to the net, sending Drumkeerin through to the semi-final.
On Wednesday evening, Drumkeerin supporters were stunned and numbed when Leitrim Gaels fired home a goal in the dying minutes of the minor clash. But our lads responded magnificiently, winning the kick-out, moving the ball quickly towards the ball goal, grabbed by young Cathal McCauley who rammed it to the net. Another win. Another golden moment and our Minors through to the County final. For Drumkeerin, it was the perfect end to a wonderful team performance. For Leitrim Gaels, it was a cruel ending for they too had given a wonderful performance.
In Aughanasheelin, the third golden goal came minutes into injury time on last Saturday evening, knocking a very fancied Ballinamore out of the Junior A Championship and sending Drumkeerin into the county semi finals. This win was a bonus. Ballinamore had topped their group, unbeaten until then. Drumkeerin had struggled into the quarter-final, having courageously regrouped following a 3-14 to 0-5 trouncing by Allen Gaels in the opening round to defeat Annaduff in the second game. Earlier this year Drumkeerin suffered a heavy defeat at home to Ballinamore. So the omens were ominous.
But time brings changes. Facing the stiff breeze, Drumkeerin played with great passion and were leading 0-6 to 0-1 with minutes remaining in the half. But Ballinamore found their rhythm and fired over three points to leave the half-time score at 0-6 to 0-4.
As the second half progressed it was evident that many of our players were tiring and Ballinamore were gaining in momentum. When they got their goal few in the crowd thought we could find the reserve and resolve to raise our game. But they did.
There was a hush as Daniel McSharry, minutes into injury time, shot to the net from the penalty spot. The third goal-den moment was complete. Well done to all three teams and managements. We wish our Intermediate team good luck and success on Saturday evening at 4.45pm in Drumshanbo. They will start as underdogs. What better way to prove who is topdog! By winning.
