Drumlease NS in Dromahair, Co Leitrim will be launching their Walk on Wednesday (WOW) events on Wednesday 6th March in a bid to get more families involved in walking to school together.

The School has started work on the Green-Schools Travel theme with An Taisce Travel Education Officer Imelda Ryan-Jones.

“It is all about families walking together and reaping the benefits together” said Imelda “Children who walk more often with their parents develop road safety awareness and benefit enormously from this. When they grow up and start to travel independently they have much better skills then those who are driven everywhere.”

Families have already started to walk or scoot to school however the Green-Schools Committee are hoping that more pupils will want to get involved due to the official launch.

The Green-Schools Committee went for a walk recently with teacher Carmel Gilroy, parent Frank Quinn and Imelda to check out some Park ‘n Stride locations and safer routes to school for families who live too far to walk all the way to school.

The Medical Centre in the town was chosen as a good initial place to park ‘n stride from. “I am delighted to support the schools initiative” said Dr Gerry Ballantyne “walking more often is exceptionally good for everyone’s health and wellbeing. Well done to the Green-Schools Committee for encouraging less families to drive all the way to school and more of them to incorporate a stroll to school into their weekday journeys.”

There are great benefits to education also. “It has been proven that pupils who expel energy en route to school are much more focused in the classroom” said Carmel Gilroy, the teacher who leads the Green-Schools programme at Drumlease NS.

The school looks forward to lots of happy families making their way to school by foot next week and both Leitrim County Council and Imelda are asking motorists to drive slow when passing any pedestrians and cyclists. We are all traffic, motorists, cyclists and pedestrian alike. Well done Drumlease NS.
