Carrick-on-Shannon was designated a Fairtrade town in 2010. Fairtrade Steering Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses and customers who continue to support this worthy cause.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2013 will run from 25th Feb to 10th March 2013. The Carrick-on-Shannon Steering Committee will be hosting an awareness event in the Market Yard on Thursday, February 28th 2013 as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Two Fairtrade representatives from Senegal will be speaking and all are welcome to attend and hear how supporting Fairtrade can make a huge difference to the lives of others in less off places in the world.

The Committee are also hosting a Fairtrade themed Table Quiz with the three primary schools in Carrick-on-Shannon on Wednesday 6th March 2013 and we would like to thank the following who have generously sponsored the table quiz prizes,

Carrick Cineplex, Mulvey’s Bowling Centre, BodaBorg in Lough Key Forest Park and Lough Allen Adventure Centre.

Each year during Fairtrade Fortnight, Carrick-on-Shannon Steering Committee has hosted awareness events and visits by Fairtrade producers from Ghana and El Salvador.

It’s been fascinating to hear first hand the benefits that Fairtrade can bring to an area and how ordinary people can make a difference to the lives of producers. Many farmers and workers in developing countries struggle to provide for their families.

Poor market access and unfair trade often mean that the price they get for their crop does not cover the cost of production. Fairtrade labelling is a rapidly growing international system which seeks to guarantee a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world.

A product that is Fairtrade certified carries a label, the FAIRTRADE Mark.

The Fairtrade Steering Committee continues to work to maintain awareness and involve local businesses and the local community in the Fairtrade campaign.

By choosing to support Fairtrade, the community can add its voice to demands for a trade system that puts people, not profit, at the heart of the transaction.
