Four men rescued after boat swept into Jamestown Weir
Four men had a very lucky escape as their rowing boat was swept into Jamestown Weir. They had missed the turn for the canal and only saw the weir when it was too late. The boat was broken up under one of the sluice gates and they were left hanging onto the weir with the current trying to drag them down.
Fortunately for them a local man had seen the incident and rushed to the weir where he was able to help them climb up out of the water. “They were very lucky indeed,” he said, “the flow was very strong and they could easily have gone under”.
The four men, very shaken and shivering, were given a sup of brandy to revive them before they were taken back to their lodgings. They had intended to row to Rooskey but missed the turn to Jamestown Canal which bypasses the weir.
