Stop signs in Manorhamitlon causing confusion

Four stop signs at the N16 and Main Street junction in Manorhamilton is causing a lot of confusion with drivers locally.

At the September Council meeting, Cllr Siobhan McGloin asked that the Council to highlight the changes to the junction in the centre of Manorhamilton. Cllr McGloin said it is causing much “confusion” and there is an “accident waiting to happen.” Cllr Sean McSharry agreed there is concern over the four sets of stop signs at the one junction.

Director of Service & Infrastructure John McGuinness told the members “The four stop signs are there to protect pedestrians.” The council said, “The junction of the N16 and Main Street in Manorhamilton has had a number of serious pedestrian accidents in recent years. In order to improve the situation options were discussed with the National Road Authority (NRA) and the option to provide 4 stop signs was the one agreed upon. While it is appreciated that it is unusual in this country to have 4 stop signs at a junction it is considered that it is the best option for this location.

“A driver must stop completely at a stop sign. In this case all the roads are within 50 km/hr speed limit and therefore all roads are of equal importance. A driver can only move off when it is safe to do so. Forcing all drivers to STOP makes everybody enter the junction slowly, giving sufficient time to see which other vehicles and pedestrians are also trying to use the junction and providing sufficient time to identify and eliminate potential conflicts. The objective is to protect pedestrians at this location. It is suggested that drivers should give way to vehicles approaching from their right as is done at roundabouts, as a courtesy.”
