Gardai issue alert following break-ins
Carrick-on-shannon Gardai are issuing an “alert” to all homeowners in Leitrim following a number of thefts and crimes over the past week.
Last week, eleven unoccupied homes in Dromod were broken into and destroyed as thieves took copper cylinders and piping. The large-scale incident took place from Thursday, November 8 to Monday morning, November 12.
Eleven houses in the Fairways estate, close to Dromod Train Station were broken into and copper cylinders were “brutally forced out,” pipes were cut and the rampage left running water leaking through the houses causing large-scale damage.
A local Sergeant told the Leitrim Observer the theft of copper is getting “very common” in the region as the value of copper increases. Gardai are advising people who own unoccupied homes, or those who live beside them, to be wary that suspects are monitoring houses. Residents are advised to report any suspicious activity in the area to Gardai.
In Ballinamore, Gardai are investigating a case of aggravated burglary on a house located out the Ballyconnell/Newtowngore Road last week.
Masked men kicked in the back door, and broke an outside CCTV before entering the house which was occupied by an elderly lady, last Wednesday night, November 7.
The thieves stole cash and electronic items. The crime occurred between 11pm and midnight on November 7. Nobody was injured, but Gardai are seeking the public’s assistance.
Gardai are also investigating a break-in at a house in the Cootehall area, Co Roscommon last Thursday night, November 8. The new house was almost ready for the owners to move in and a large number of electronic items were stolen.
There is also a warning for people who own valuable pets to be vigilant and watch out for thieves following a complaint from a Kilclare resident this week. A number of dogs have been reported missing in the region and a local Kilclare resident believes they scared off a roaming thief at the weekend.
The resident told the Leitrim Observer that they own a show dog and it was out in the garden when the family spotted a strange van slow down and stop beside the animal. When someone went down to the dog, the van moved off quickly.
The concerned resident said the vehicle was a large silver van and many dogs are being targeted for breeding and for fighting in the UK.
