Gardai report “lethal” roads following snow
Manorhamilton Gardai described the R280 Drumkeerin to Drumshanbo road as “lethal” on Tuesday morning, February 5 after a fall of snow and frost.
There were reports of at least five singe vehicle accidents in the Carrick-on-Shannon area on Tuesday morning and one accident at Mount Allen on R280, many roads around the county were found to be in a dangerous condition.
Met Éireann issued a ‘Status Orange’ weather warning on Monday afternoon forecasting wind, hail, sleet and snow.
A spokesperson for Leitrim County Council on Tuesday said “Roads were gritted last night and crews were out again early this morning following snow falls.”
The Ballinamore to Carrick-on-Shannon R208 was found to be in a particular bad state, the council said “due to a mechanical problem the Ballinamore to Carrick-on-Shannon road was delayed this morning and Council staff had to be deployed to manually deal with critical locations.”
Council men were on hand to assist cars in climbing the incline onto the R208 just past Berine’s Garage on the Ballinamore-Carrick road.
While a number of accidents were reported, it is understood no one was injured.
Leitrim County Council said “We will continue to treat roads as required over the coming days in line with the weather conditions.” Met Eireann are reporting hail, rain and gusts with frost in Connaught Ulster over the next few days.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme care on the roads in the current weather conditions and especially on untreated roads.
