Glenfarne seeks further Garda presence

The closing of Glenfarne Garda Station was branded the “end of an era” for a border district that once had the presence of 12 gardai.
Cllr Sean McDermott expressed concern for the border region of Glenfarne and Kiltyclogher. He asked for more “Garda patrols, more checkpoints and more presence.” He said the area could give easy access for criminals to abscond across the border. He said the Text Alert scheme seems to have been working well in other areas and “Glenfarne are in the process of getting one set up.”
The community have been promised clinics to be held frequently for gardai to meet locals and for local people to express concerns etc to the Gardai.
It is understood the Garda Station located opposite The Rainbow Ballroom of Romance was built around the time of the Irish Civil War. Seamus O’Rourke told the paper that in 1959 there were 12 Gardai stationed in Glenfarne because of it’s close proximity to the border of Fermanagh.
The well kept Garda station which was upgraded a few years ago also has living quarters and up until seven years ago, gardai stationed in Glenfarne lived in the single storey building. Locals said that Gardai and Sergeants reared families in the station and they brought vibrancy to the community. Manorhamilton is now Glenfarne’s station of contact.
Cllr McDermott said the area needs more “unannounced checkpoints.” Locals hope that the new community policing programme will work and they said they would like to see the station given back to the community.
