Healthy Eating at Drumlease N.S.

Organic pigs, bread ovens, slabs of cheese, hot woks – just some of the unusual sights (and smells) that were to be seen around Drumlease N.S. last week.

It was all part of the schools Healthy Eating awareness week. The aim was to raise awareness and understanding amongst pupils and staff of the importance of food and particularly healthy food in our lives.

Events got underway on Tuesday morning with School Principal David O’Farrell, officially launching the schools guidelines at assembly.

These guidelines were drawn up in conjunction with parents, pupils and teachers and are designed to promote a healthy approach to food.

Following assembly, chefs John Kelly and David McCormack from the Riverbank restaurant in Dromahair prepared two meals for the pupils- a Cajun chicken salad and a pork stirfry. All agreed that school lunch never tasted so good!

The following day, Myra and Trevor Irvine from ‘Cheese Etc.’ in Dromahair, gave the pupils a talk on cheese making. This was followed by a chance to taste many different types of cheese, including goats, sheep and cows cheese.

Thursday saw parents Mike and Jo Lewis guide the pupils in the preparation and baking of their own bread. The wonderful aroma of baking bread wafted through the corridors as pupils awaited the fruits of their efforts to emerge from the oven.

Events concluded on Friday with the visit of a few special guests from Tullywood Fram, Keadue. Rare breed pigs such as the Tamworth are reared on this farm and the pupils were delighted to meet a few of them and also have an opportunity to sample some of the delicious meats.

Teacher Michelle Doyle deserves great credit for co-ordinating such a busy schedule and the pupils certainly had a school week with a difference.
