Heartbroken family renew appeal for missing man
Patrick Heeran disappeared in October 2011. His family are renewing appeals for information.
The heartbroken family of Pat Heeran have renewed appeals for information on his whereabouts nearly a year to the day since his disappearance after he travelled to Mohill from his home in Aughavas, Co Leitirm.
Mr Heeran hasn’t been seen since the evening of the 3rd October, 2011. Gardai have traced his movements into Mohill where he entered a local pharmacy and is seen on CCTV, however they have not been able to firmly establish Mr Heeran’s movements in the hours following this.
Mr Heeran’s family have been left in agony over the last 12 months, suspecting that something awful has happened to their much loved son and brother, but unable to find any trace of him.
Hundreds of people have combed miles and miles of countryside in the last year in Co Leitrim and north Longford in a bid to locate Pat, searching canals, fields and abandoned buildings.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Pat’s cousin, Damian Brennan, said that it was impossible to understand the desperation and upset endured by Pat’s immediate family in the year since his disappearance.
“The family has spent the last year in agony, waiting and hoping for news,” he acknowledged. “From time to time their hopes have been raised but they were always disappointed.”
He paid tribute to the family’s friends and neighbours in Cloone and Aughavas and the wider South Leitrim area who had spent endless hours searching for Pat “but to no avail”.
“Despite their best efforts and the efforts of gardai it would appear that there is very little to go on at the moment,” he said. Even a national appeal for information and a concerted postering and online campaign for information has failed to produce any leads on Pat’s whereabouts.
“The family are very thankful for the generous support of people from all over the county who have rallied round them and done everything possible to find Pat. The family are especially grateful to the media for continuing highlight Pat’s disappearance,” he said.
“We continue to live in the hope that Pat will be found so as to enable the family to bring closure to the nightmare of the last year. The really horrifying thing is that somebody living in the community in Leitrim or north Longford knows what happened to Pat and it is unbelievable that they have not even come forward anonymously to let the family know where he is. That is the worst, not knowing.”
Pat is described as being 5’9’’ in height and of stocky build. Anyone who may have seen Pat in either the Mohill or Aughavas area on the day of his disappearance or anyone who may have information on Pat’s present whereabouts, is asked to contact gardai in Carrick-on-Shannon on (071) 9620021 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
“The family just want closure on this. They want to find Pat, to bring him home, that is all they are hoping for,” said Mr Brennan. “That’s all they want. Closure.”
