The Health Service Executive has taken charge of Mulross Nursing Home, Kilclare from 4.30pm today, Friday, January 4.

There was much confusion locally over the future of the Nursing Home as it seemed unclear whether the facility would remain open or not.

On December 28, Stephen Buckley the registered care provider informed families of the residents and staff that the facility would close and that residents needed to source alternative accommodation. However Patricia Foley, the owner of Mulross Nursing Home disputed the closure and said she would keep the facility open “if viable.”

Talks at Mulross Nursing Home were held today, January 4 involving HIQA, the HSE and the two parties involved.

This afternoon HIQA informed the Leitrim Observer, “The Registered Provider of Mulross Nursing Home, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, has notified the Authority that he has accepted the decision of the Authority to cancel his registration as the registered provider of Mulross Nursing Home, pursuant to Section 51 of the Health Act 2007.

“The Authority, acting in the public interest and in the interest of the health, safety and quality of life of the residents, has agreed that the Health Service Executive will take charge of Mulross Nursing Home from 4.30pm today, 4 January 2013, in accordance with Section 64 of the Health Act 2007 and with the full cooperation of the Registered Provider.”

HIQA has asked the HSE to make alternative arrangements for the management of the nursing home as soon as practicable. During this time the authority will maintain its statutory role in assessing the quality and safety of the services provided to the residents.
