In this week’s Leitrim Observer

In this week’s Leitrim Observer there is reaction to the Budget, in which Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin outlined that the Government intends to discontinue funding in 2012 for private roads under the Local Improvements Scheme.

Other Budget news which hasn’t been received favourably locally is the decision to close garda stations in the county. The stations which face closure are in Drumkeerin and Kiltyclogher.

There was better news when Deputy Frank Feighan announced he has been informed by Minister Richard Bruton that negotiations regarding the sale of MBNA business in Carrick-on-Shannon are considerably advanced.

Elsewhere in this week’s Leitrim Observer there is an exclusive interview with economist David McWilliams while local councillors have slammed what was described as the Irish ‘culture of drink’.

In sport, the sporting year was celebrated in Lough Rynn Castle last weekend as Leitrim Sports Partnership hosted the 2011 Leitrim Sports Star Awards. Among the winners were Laura Reynolds (Overall Sports Star); Aine Tighe (Sports Individual Senior) and Daire Farrell (Sports Individual Junior).

Attention this weekend turns to the Leitrim GAA County Board Convention and in this week’s paper the secretary’s report and treasurer’s report are assessed while there is also a preview of the various motions that will debated.
