Information sought on searching for missing people

Cllr Gordon Hughes has called for greater clarity on search protocols following two searches for missing men in the south Leitrim area in recent weeks.

In a motion before last week’s Council meeting the Fine Gael Councillor asked the County Manager to advise what role, if any the Local Authority had in co-ordinating the search for people missing in the county.

“There doesn’t appear to be any agency taking responsibility for organising searches,” he noted.

Responding on behalf of the Council, the Director of Service, Environment, Emergency and Cultural Services, Martin Dolan, said that the An Garda Síochána is the agency responsible for the co-ordination of searches for missing persons.

“The local authority can only become involved when requested to do so by the Gardaí. The Council’s Civil Defence Volunteers, under the direction of the Civil Defence Officer, frequently provides assistance in such incidents when requested, and is always willing to do so,” he added.

Cllr Hughes asked that, in light of this, the Council write to the Acting Superintendent in Carrick-on-Shannon and the Garda Commissioner and ask them to clarify their policy in organising searches for missing persons.
