Investigation into collapsed wall that claimed two lives
The Health and Safety Authority are conducting a major investigation into the collapse of a nine metre wall which killed two and injured four others at Connacht Gold, Longford last week.
The funerals of the two local men who were killed by the freak accident were held over the weekend. Both men were customers in the DIY store located on the Athlone road, outside of Longford on Tuesday, January 29 when the wall collapsed just after lunchtime.
Hundreds turned out to the funerals of Sean Mulleady age 47, from Creenagh in Co Longford and Paddy Gaffney, 65, from Cloonshannagh, Rooskey in Co Roscommon in Drumlish and Tarmonbarry last Friday, February 1.
Sean Mulleady, a well known businessman kept his own stables and was a member of the Longford Harriers and South Leitrim Harriers hunt clubs.
Farmer Paddy Gaffney was a former employee of Glanbia.
Four other people were injured, including staff members. It is understood that all but one are recuperating at home. One person is still being treated for non-life threatening leg injuries at the Midlands Regional Hospital.
CEO of Connacht Gold Aaron Forde said the company is co-operating with investigations into the cause of the accident.
He expressed sympathy for the family of the men who were fatally injured in the accident at the Longford store and said the company is providing counselling to employees and shoppers who were affected by the accident.
